Son of William James Veale and Harriet Evelyn Veale nee Collins of Barongarook via Colac, Victoria.
On 28 February 1927 Charles married Muriel Mildred McKenzie in Victoria. Address at the time of enlistment for WW2 was given as Corangamite Street, Colac, Victoria. Post WW1 he worked as a salesman and also furniture dealer.

Eldest of ten children, Charles William Veale (Bill), worked on farm duties and dry stone-walling in the district.
Bill served in WWI, and on his return, he introduced the first professional bus service to Colac known as the 'Blue Bus Service'.
Bill and four of his brothers enlisted in WW2. As a Warrant Officer, Bill was appointed to special work at VDC HQ including Intelligence, Map Making and arranging of Coast Watching Posts along the Western District as far as Portland which included plans and reconnaissance sketches of bridges for demolition.
In 1944, he commenced duty with the United Kingdom Army & RAF Liaison Staff Headquarters in Melbourne for which he was highly commended and later served in Perth and Darwin.
