Sergeant Hugh Colin Smith (Service No:WX39191) served with the ACMF (Private; Service No:W30776) with 19 Garrison Battalion and was promoted to Corporal on 21 February 1942. Corporal Smith enlisted in the AIF on 5 May 1943 and was promoted to Sergeant on 19 September 1945. Sergeant Smith was attached to District Accounts Office WA at Discharge on 29 MArch 1946.

Born in 1908 in York Western Australia, Hugh was third of eight children of Percy Webster Smith (b1873 in Essex, England) and Mary Ann Lawrence Touchell (b1878 in Keilli, South Australia). Percy had immigrated by 1900 and in 1901 was working in Kalgoorlie WA as a Fitter. He and Mary married in Boulder WA in 1903 and lived in Kalgoorlie, Southern Cross, York and Narrogin where Percy worked as a Miner, Assayer,Timekeeper and Stock and Station Agent. In 1917 Percy enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:7138) and following his Discharge he and Mary settled with their family in Perth. Percy and Mary separated in 1921 and divorced in 1933. Percy worked as a Mortgage Broker, Traveller and Land Salesman and remarried.

Hugh worked as a Salesman in Perth and in 1933 in Fremantle he married Marjorie Olive Withers (b1907 in Leonora, WA). Hugh and Marjorie settled in Bunbury where Hugh was a Business Manager in 1941 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge, Hugh and Mary lived in Katanning where Hugh was Business Manager at the Royal Exchange Hotel, then was Publican - 1949 at the Park Hotel in Mt Barker, 1954 at the Tambellup Hotel and 1958 at Chequers Hotel in Bullsbrook. Hugh and Marjorie retired in the early 1960s and settled in Perth where Marjorie died in 1966. Hugh died in 2005.
