Youngest of the four brothers (Fred, Ron, Allan and George) who served in WWII, Private George Alexander Sherwell (Service Nos:V64123/VX100554/V6684) initially enlisted in the ACMF on 21 August 1940 as a Signalman with A Dision Engineers and 20 Field Army Coy. Signalman Sherwell transferred to the AIF on 7 September 1942, and was attached to LHQ Heavy Wireless Group. On 6 December 1944 he was attached to 18 Wireless Section when he embarked from Townsville for Lae on board the Taroona, and was attached to 90 High Speed Section on 20 June 1945 when he emplaned from Morotai for return to the mainland. Private Sherwell then transferred to the Interim Army on 1 July 1947, and was attached to AHQ Signals Regiment at Discharge on 2 June 1948.
George was born in Nhill, Victoria in 1918, tenth of the eleven children of James (Jim) Sherwell (b1867 in Burra, South Australia) and his second wife Jessie Cliff (b1878 in Morphett Vale, South Australia). Jim moved to the Rupanyup district in Victoria in 1885, and was a Farmer. In 1906 he was a Widower with three small children when he and Jessie married in Nhill, where they settled and raised their family. By 1914, Jim was working as a Contractor.
George worked as a Garage Hand and Labourer in Nhill, helping his mother Jessie following Jim's death in 1932. In 1939 George moved to Melbourne Ports, living with older brother Ron and Ron's wife, and was a Paper Mill Worker in 1940 when he enlisted in the Army. In 1945 in Melbourne, George married Betty Ellen Fisher (b1927 in Sunbury, Victoria). Following his Discharge from the Army in 1948, George and Betty settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and George was a Process Worker. George died in 1992 and Betty died in 2016.
