Corporal Gordon Charles Browning (Service No:6298) enlisted in the AIF on 18 October 1916 and was a Private attached to 27 Infantry Battalion when he embarked from Fremantle on 23 December 1916 on board HMAT Berrimah A35. Corporal Browning served in France with 27 and 28 Infantry Battalions, and was WiA on 4 November 1917 (Gassed). He embarked for Fremantle on 12 July 1919 on board HT City of Exeter and was Discharged on 24 September 1919. Brother Thomas (Service No:516) was KiA at Gallipoli and Alexander ( Service No:7266) also served in WWI.
Born in 1889 in Tallagatta Victoria, Bill was the second of seven children of Charles Browning (b1865 in Daylesford, Victoria) and Susan Gemmill (b1871 in Heathcote, Victoria). Charles and Susan were in Albury NSW when they married in 1888 and had relocated to Northam WA by 1897. They settled in Northam where they raised their family and Charles worked as a Railways Ganger/Labourer.
Bill worked as a Plate Layer on the Railways in Northam and in 1912 married Maude Elizabeth McBride (b1893 in Northam, WA). Bill and Maude settled in Northam where they raised their family and Bill worked for WAGR. Bill died in 1949 and Maude in 1955.
