Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Born in Berkshire, England, Bert was the youngest of three children of William James West (b1877 in Berkshire, England) and Melitta Cooper (b1878 in Berkshire, England). When they married in 1905, William was a Coachman and Melitta a Post Office Attendant. By the time the family emigrated in 1912, William was a Farmer on Little New Farm in Sulhamstead, Berkshire. William and Melitta with their three children arrived in Fremantle WA in 1912 on board the Armadale. The family lived in Gin Gin and Wubin WA where William was a Farm Manager before moving to Buntine in Dalwalinu in the 1930s, where William was a Farmer.

Bert was in Buntine, WA in 1934 when he married Dorothy (Dot) Evangeline Dilley (b1912 in Fremantle, WA) - Dot was working in Perth as a Waitress. The couple moved to Bunbury WA where Bert was working as a Carpenter when he enlisted in the ACMF in May 1942 (Private; Service No:W6963). Bert served with 4 Battalion (Bunbury) VDC and was attached to 3 Battalion VDC when he was Demobilised in 1945.

In 1943 Bert and Dot had moved to Perth WA where Bert worked as a Labourer and by 1949 had moved to Buntine, Dalwalinu where Bert was a Farmer with his father. In the early 1960s Bert moved his family to Joondanna in Perth, where he worked as a Sales Representative. Bert died in 1995 and Dot in 1996.
