Walter left Melbourne with the 10th Battalion on the Port Melbourne on 21 June 1916 and disembarked at Devonport, England on 28 December. He was hospitalised with mumps at Parkhouse Hospital in England on 27 March 1917, prior to going to France with his unit on 25 April. Walter was wounded in action in France on 18 September 1918. He was well enough to return to Australia on the Demosthenes on 16 January 1919, reaching Adelaide on 26 February and was discharged on 8 April.
