Basil Walter Roberts first enlisted in England on 17 December 1915 during WW1 with an occupation of Motor Driver in the Royal Air Force. Basil at this time was married to Margaret Ramsay and was living in the Norfolk area of England working as a Motor driver for the Duke and Duchess of Beaufort at the House of Beaufort.
Very little is known of Basil’s WW1 activities as his records were destroyed with many others during WW2.
Basil and Margaret migrated to Australia in 1921 making their home in the Newcastle suburb of New Lambton. Basil enlisted for part time work on the 30 March 1942, serving for Australia during WW2 aged 56 in the 31st Battalion VDC. Basil listed “Motor Driver” and “Stores Clerk” as a trade and his current occupation.
Margaret’s sister Agnes had previously migrated to Newcastle from Scotland after her marriage during WW1 to Harold Murray of the 30th Battalion AIF.
Margaret died in 1958 and Basil in 1967.
