Henry James Beames was born on the 4th of March 1896 in Hindmarsh, South Australia. He grew up in a small rural town called Two Wells with a large family, his father, George James Beames, his mother Charisa M Beames (Pitchard), and his 8 siblings. He was the 5th eldest of 4 girls and 4 boys.

Before Henry enlisted, he worked as an Ironworker. According to his Attestation Papers, Henry stood a height of 5 feet 10 inches and weighed 57kg.

On the 18th of September 1916, at the age of 20 years old, Henry was enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). He was assigned to the 50th Infantry Battalion. After the enlisting, Henry began basic military training in Mitcham, Adelaide. On the 6th of November 1916, Henry left Australia by ship HMAT Afric. Henry served on the Western Front. In March 1917 he became ill with tonsilitis and was hospitalised. He was appointed to Lance Corporal in January 1918

Henry returned back to Australia, embarking 30th July 1919. He was formally discharged 7 September 1919. After the war Henry moved to Port Lincoln where he married Robena. Henry passed away on the 24th of August 1989, at the age of 93, from natural causes associated with old age. He was buried at the Happy Valley Cemetery in Port Lincoln, South Australia
