Duel Service
Walter Alister Kirk joined the 2nd Australian Light Horse in August 1914 and transferred to the Australian Flying Corps in October 1917. In 1918, he flew as an observer on Bristol Fighters. By the end of the war, Kirk scored 7 victories. During World War II, he served as a Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Australian Air Force.
During the months of June and July Kirk and his pilot, Capt. Ross Smith, accounted for two enemy machines, and they were cited for their gallantry and initiative in attacking ground targets, frequently at very low altitudes. The keenness and fine example set by these officers cannot be over-estimated.
