Younger of two siblings (Neville and Margery) who served in WWII, Corporal Margery Ellen Rackham (Service No:Vf345435) served in the AWAS - appointed Clerk - with District Accounts Office Victoria from 6 June 1942 to 25 October 1944.
Margery was born in Sunshine, Victoria in 1923, third of six children of George Arthur Rackham (b1887 in Robe, South Australia) and Amy Griffin (nee Bates; b1889 in Creswick, Victoria). George was a Book Keeper at Denicull Creek, Creswick via Ararat in 1914 when he enlisted in the AIF (Sergeant; Service No:2074), returning to Denicull Creek following his Discharge in 1919. In 1920 George was an Iron Moulder when he and Amy married in Melbourne - Amy was a Widow with an infant son. They settled in Sunshine, where they raised their family and George worked as an Iron Moulder and Builder before moving to Ararat in 1930. George worked as a Mental Hospital Attendant in Ararat, then served in the ACMF in WWII (Private; Service No:V5355). George and Amy lived in Melbourne until Amy's death in 1953. George then retired to Ballarat.
Margery worked as News Agent's Ledger Keeper in Ararat, and was was a Clerk living at the YWCA Hostel in Melbourne in 1942 when she enlisted in the Army. Margery Discharged from the Army in 1944, and was in Melbourne, when she married Kenneth (Ken) Albert Higginbotham (b1917 in Ascot Vale, Victoria) - Ken was a Sergeant in the Army (Service No:V146448). Following Ken's Discharge in 1946 the couple settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Ken worked as a Real Estate Agent, and both Margery and Ken were Company Directors. Ken died in 1976 and Margery died in 2003.
