John Martin Archibald Hart, nicknamed Tom, was born in May 1895 in Stirling, South Australia. His mother was Sophia Louisa Wright. Hart’s occupation before the war was a milkman.
Hart enlisted on 20/5/1916 and he embarked from Australia on 12/8/1916 in a ship named the HMT Ballarat and disembarked at Devonport. He completed fourther traing and proceeded overseas to france 12th December 1916 and was taken on strength with the 50th Battalion. He was reported missing in action 2nd April 1917 and was confirmed as a Prinsoner of War captured at Noreuil.
He was sent back to England 18th December 1919 and granted leave. In January 1919 his mother wrote an anxious letter to Base Records seeking information as she had not heard whether he had been repatriated since the armitice was signed.
He returned to Australia departing UK 31st March 1919 and arrived back in Adelaide 9th May 1919. He was formally discharged 30th June 1919.
