Born at Reservoir in Melbourne, Victoria in 1921, Pat was eldest of three children of Arthur Hamilton Hammond (b1892 in Penshurst, Victoria) and Gertrude Louise Huxley (b1889 in Horton, Tasmania). They settled in Melbourne where they raised their family and Arthur worked as a Clerk and Valuer.

Pat worked in Melbourne as a Bank Officer before enlisting in the Army. Following her Discharge, she was working in Perth, WA in 1949 when she married John Charles Reid (b1918 in Perth, WA) - John, a Farmer, had served in the ACMF (Service No: W76034). Pat and John settled at Yelbeni via Toodyay WA, where they raised their family and John was a Farmer.
