William Ludlow enlisted for the war in October 1915 and was assigned to the 3rd Field Company Engineers, part of the 3rd Brigade. He left Australia for the war on 20 March 1916.

William Ludlow's last role on the battlefield was a sapper. William was wounded in action on 21 April 1917 and embarked for St. Patrick hospital and made a successful recovery. He had a severe injury on his left thigh from a nearby bomb explosion. He departed England for Australia in December 1917 and was discharged from the AIF in August 1918. He was a cycle maker post WW1 and was married to his wife, Julia Ann Ludlow, with no children.
