Warrant Officer I Stuart James Powling (Service Nos:V11362/VX64834) initially served in the Militia for eight years as a Lieutenant attached to 4th Light Horse Regiment. Corporal Powling served in the ACMF (3 March to 27 October 1941) with Central Provisions Office and 3 R&T Camp before transferring to the AIF. WO I Powling served in India (7 January 1942 - 30 December 1943) and was attached to Central Provisions Office (EG) at Discharge on 1 July 1946.

Stuart was born at Ballangeich via Warrnambool, Victoria in 1903, third (and only son) of four children of James George Powling (b1870 in Panmure, Victoria) and Mary Gill Robinson (b1873 in Woodford via Warrnambool, Victoria). James and Mary married in 1896 in Warrnambool, and settled in Ballangeich and later East Framlingham via Mortlake, where they raised their family and James was a Farmer until his death in 1936 - Mary died in 1926.

Stuart was a Farmer in Framlingham, and in 1927 in Warrnambool married Barbara Taylor Horne (b1901 in Allansford via Warrnambool, Victoria) - Barbara was a Teacher. In the mid 1930s Stuart and Barabara moved to Melbourne, where Stuart worked as a Clerk and Shearing Machine Expert. Following his Discharge from the Army in 1946, Stuart and Barbara settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Stuart was a Shearing Machine Expert. In the early 1960s Stuart and Barbara moved to Naranga via Hamilton, where Stuart was a Grazier until his death in 1971. Barbara died in 1990.
