Robert fought on Gallipoli from early September 1915 till he was wounded with shell shock on 19 November 1915 and evacuated to Egypt. He was recommended for a Military Medal for his good and gallant conduct at Pozieres the week before he died. He was mortally wounded on the 4 August 1916 and died of wounds the next day.
Robert's younger brother 2344 Pte. James Dodds 7th Battalion AIF, was also killed at Pozieres, 2 weeks later on 18 August 1916, aged 20.
His half-brother (same mother) 1247 John William Eaves 8th Battalion AIF won the MM, and was recommended for a DCM.
Another brother QX3057 Private Gilbert Dodds 2/9th Battalion AIF, was killed in action in Libya on 21 March 1941, one of the first Australian casualties of WW2, age 38.
