Private Rita Mary Kuhnell (Service No:Vf510712) served in the AWAS from 27 May 1943 to 1 November 1944 with Australian Army Canteen Services Club and 6 Australian Workshop and Parks Coy.

Born in 1922 in Melbourne Victoria, Rita was fifth of eight children of Charles Rudolph Kuhnell (b1880 in Malmsbury, Victoria) and Henrietta Rebecca Smith (b1895 in Neerim, Victoria). Charles (a Labourer) and Henrietta married in 1914 in Melbourne where they settled and raised their family and Charles worked as a Labourer. Four of their sons - Ron, Gordon, Bert and Lindsay - and daughter Rita served in WWII.

Rita stated on her Attestation Papers for the AWAS that her occupation was 'Home Dutuies' and also 'Dining Room Attendant. Following her Discharge, in 1946 in Melbourne Rita married Neil Grant (b1918 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Neil - a Labourer - served in the Army (VX52470/V56177). Rita and Neil settled in Melbourne where Neil worked as a Labourer. Rita died in 1990 and Neil in 2001.
