Son of William Frederick Opie and Elizabeth Opie nee McJannett of Westgarth Street, Northcote, Victoria.

Previously served in the Royal Australian Navy for 5 years. He also served his apprenticeship in engineering with McCutheon & Co. of Fitzroy, Victoria

During 1915c William married Ada Elizabeth Bergin in Victoria

William wrote a confession admitting that he had deserted the AIF on 5 February 1917 while on leave and frauduently enlisted in the Royal Navy on 7 February 1917 and served in the engine room until surrendering to the Australian authorities on 17 February 1919.

Commenced return to Australia on 31 March 1919 aboard HT Khyber disembarking on 21 May 1919
