Private Maitland James Withnell (Service No:W16636) served in the ACMF from 5 February 1941 to 12 November 1945 with 10, 29 and 5 Garrison Battalions. Private Withnell was attached to HQ Western Command at Discharge.

Maitland was born in Northam, WA in 1921, eldest of two children of Sydney James Harding Withnell (b1898 at Clackline via Northam, WA) and Violet Evelyn Green (b1898 in Mundijong, WA). Sydney worked as a Station Hand before serving in the AIF in WWI, and was a Farmer at Iron Hill via Northam, WA in 1926 when he and Violet married in Mundijong, where they lived until the late 1930s when they moved to Perth and Sydney worked as a Fireman until retirement.

Maitland was a Photographer in Perth when he enlisted in the ACMF in 1940. In 1944 in Perth, he married Bary Agatha Beeson (b1924 in Mingenew, WA) - Beryl was serving in the AWAS (Service No:WF91202). Following Discharge from the Army, Maitland and Beryl settled in Perth, where they raised their family and Maitland worked as a Gardener and Truck Driver until his death in 1985. Beryl died in 1996.
