When the barrage opened he had his gun and crew in a post in our original front line. Observing that the left portion of the advance was being subjected to heavy Machine Gun fire from his front, he ran forward with his gun and brought it into action. His work in engaging these hostile guns drew much retaliatory fire upon himself and his crew and undoubtedly saved many casualties in our advancing waves. He remained in this exposed position throughout the day setting a splendid example of daring. His prompt initiative in bringing his gun into action from this quarter gave most valuable results.
