Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

John was the fifth of eight children of George Fernley (b1878 in London, England) and Alice Marjorie Foster (b1881 in Hertfordshire, England). George (a Factory Labourer) and Alice married in 1905 in London, where they raised their family. George was working as a Stevedore/Wharf Labourer in London in 1916 when he died. In 1923 Alice emigrated with her children, arriving in Fremantle WA on board the Benalla. By 1924 Alice had remarried - Alexander May, a Farmer in Wagin WA - and settled in Dumbleyung near Wagin WA.

John worked as a Shearer in Dumbleyung WA and in April 1941 enlisted in the Australian Army (Private; Service No:WX11381). John served with 2/23 Infantry Battalion and 3rd Special Services Training Coy, and was attached to Details 4 Coy when he was Discharged in April 1944. Brother Ernest (WX36132/W54930) also served in WWII, and son John (Private; Service No:52072) served in the Korean War.

John returned to Dumblyung WA and worked as a Shearer before moving to Kelmscott WA where he worked as a Yard Hand. In the early 1960s he moved to Rivervale, Perth where he worked as a Brickyard Hand. John died in 1980.
