Ludwig left Melbourne on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 22 December 1917. While in England he was hospitalised at Sutton Veny with bronchitis for 3 days in February 1918 but was able to go to France with the 50th Battalion on 6 May. He was gassed in action on 17 September and admitted to Rouen Hospital then sent to Reading Hospital, England on 4 November to be treated for his wound and dysentery. Being classed as medically unfit, Ludwig was returned to Australia on the Bakara on 22 December and was discharged on 4 March 1919.
