The third of seven children, Tom was born in 1900 in Kalgoorlie WA. His parents - James Alderson Howson (b1876 in Durham, England) and Minnie Mary Ann Ballard (b1879 in Adelaide, South Australia) married in 1897 in Fremantle WA. James had emigrated in 1880, arriving in Fremantle WA on board the Robert Morrison. James was a Painter, and he and Minnie lived in Fremantle and Kalgoorlie before settling in Perth WA.

Tom was a Labourer in 1922 when he married Eleanor Florence Ambrose Taylor (b1904 in Fremantle, WA). Following Eleanor's death in 1938, Tom married Nellie Power (b1905 in Perth, WA) -  Nellie was a Tailoress. Tom enlisted in the ACMF in July 1940 (Gunner; Service No:WW244358) as a Cook with 3rd Field Battalion Narrogin. He was attached to Naval Base Training Depot when he was Discharged in September 1940. He and Nellie were in Narrogin WA in March 1941 when he re-enlisted in the ACMF (Gunner; Service No:W2520) attached to Field Artillery Narrogin. Tom was Discharged as Medically Unfit in July 1941.

Tom and Nellie lived in Perth, Jarrahwood and Donnelly Mills where Tom was a Farmer, Mill Hand and Timber Worker before settling in Fremantle WA by  the late 1960s. Nellie died in 1968 and Tom in 1972.
