Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

One of five brothers (Greg, Sam, Gordon and Ken) who served in WWII, Lance Corporal William Howard Davies (Service Nos:W29807/WX18654) initially served in the Militia (Private; Service No:W926) with 28th Battalion from 25 March 1939, and was a Corporal on 30 July 1940 when he enlisted in the ACMF at Melville Training Depot. Corporal Davies was 'in the field' on Rottnest Island when he enlisted in the AIF on 6 January 1942, and was attached to 13 Training Battalion and 7/32 Battalion. Transferred to 2/28th Infantry Battalion on 8 June 1944, Lance Corporal Davies served in Borneo (Morotai and Balikapan) from 23 April to 3 December 1945, and was attached to 2/28th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 24 January 1946.

Named after his Uncle (William Howard Davies who served in WWI and died in 1918), Bill was born in Toodyay, Western Australia in 1919, eighth of nine children of Samuel Romney Davies (b1878 in Wasleys, South Australia) and Maude McKennay (b1883 in Kapunda, South Australia). Samuel (a Miner) and Maude married in 1902 in Boulder, Western Australia and by 1910 had settled on Strathavon Farm in Toodyay, where they raised their family and Samuel was an Orchardist. Samuel and Maude moved to Wattle Grove in Canning in 1940 - Samuel was an Orchardist.

Bill worked in Toodyay as a Farm Hand, and in 1940 in Fremantle married his first wife Christina (Christy) McLeod (b1924 in Scotland). Following his Discharge from the Army, Bill and Christy settled in Toodyay, where Bill worked as a Driver. Bill and Christy divorced, and in 1968 in Perth Bill remarried to Olive Margaret Molloy (nee Karlovsky; b1921 in Beverley, Western Australia) - Olive had served in the WAAAF (Corporal; Service No:99499) in WWII. Bill and Olive settled in Glen Forrest in Kalamunda, where Bill was a Bee Keeper until his death in 1980. Olive died in 2011.
