"Death of Lieut. Waraker
Mrs. E. M. Waraker, of Gregory-terrace, Brisbane, received letters of sympathy from a number of officers at the front concerning thd death in action of Lieut. N. E. Waraker, (says the "Brisbane Courier"). Included among the number are letters from the A.D.C. to Sir Douglas Haig, Capt. Millar, Lieuts. Cleary aand J. S. Kerr, all of whom speak of Lieut. Waraker'a bravery and devotion to duty under fire. Major-General Nevill Smyth wrote:
"I wish that I could write some words of comfort to you upon the loss which I and my staff have sustained in the death of Lieut. N. E. Waraker, whose services we so highly valued in his capacity as bombing officer and instructor to the division. His invariable cheerfulness and devotion to duty endeared him to us all, and he was most popular with all who knew him, including Field-Marshall Sir Douglas Haig's staff, and General Wisdom, and the officers of the ----- Australian Brigade, who valued his services very highly, and feel that a great asset to the efficiency of force has been lost by his death." (Lieut. Waraker was a grandson of the late Rev. J. T, Waraker, the first Congregational minister of West Maitland)." - from the Maitland Daily Mercury 12 Dec 1917 (nla.gov.au)
