Biography contributed by Robert Wight

Thomas Bond Wickham enlisted in the AIF at Broadmeadows on 1 April 1915, aged almost 31. He embarked overseas on 25 June 1915, arrived in Egypt in late July, then landed at Gallipoli with the 13th Light Horse Regiment on 11 September 1915. He was evacuated back to Egypt and hospitalised with frost bite, and later enteric fever, from 11 December 1915 – 9 February 1916, at which time he was repatriated to Australia to recover.

He returned to duty on 15 May 1916, embarked overseas for the second time on 20 October and arrived in Plymouth on 9 January 1917. He left for France on 25 April where he re-joined the 13th Light Horse Regiment, assigned as cavalry for I ANZAC Corps, on 3 May 1917.

While the terrain and trench warfare of the Western Front was not generally conducive to cavalry operations, there were several occasions on which they played a very active part. This was particularly the case during the 1918 German Offensives on the Lys (April) and the Marne (July), and then between 5 – 9 September 1918 during the allied assault on the Hindenburg Outpost Line.

At war’s end, Trooper Wickham returned to England on 15 June 1919 and then departed for Australia on 13 July. He arrived back in Melbourne on 29 August, where he was formally discharged from the AIF on 21 October 1919.
