Wes was the son of Richard Ashby (b1873 in Perth WA) and Emily Jane Bowden (b1880 in Melbourne, Victoria). Richard (a Labourer) and Emily married in 1902 in Perth WA where Richard worked as a Labourer and Driver before moving to Wanneroo where he was a Market Gardener until his death in 1927.

Wes was working as a Market Gardener in Wanneroo when he enlisted in the ACMF in August 1941. He was a Private (Service No:W82350) attached to 3 Battalion (Swanbourne) VDC when he was Discharged in April 1943. Wes continued living in Wanneroo and working as a Market Gardener. In 1955 he married Ann Barr Robertson (b1907) and the couple moved to Beverley WA in the late 1950s - Wes worked as a Farm Hand. Wes and Ann retired to Busselton WA where Ann died in 1980 and Wes in 1985.
