Next of kin given as his cousin Jack Lucas of Geirson Street, Waverley, NSW. Thomas had been raised by his aunt Catherine Ryan from the age of fourteen months.
Serving his jockey apprenticeship with Frank McGrath who had won the Melbourne Cup with Peter Pan.
Commenced return to Australia on 22 January 1920 aboard HT Friedrichsuhr disembarking on 12 March 1920
