The seventh of nine children, Horace was born in 1893 in Morwell, Victoria to James Alexander Bowden (b1856 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Martha Boyd (b1857 in Melbourne, Victoria). James (a Labourer) and Martha married in 1879 in Melbourne, Victoria where they lived until 1892 when they moved to Morwell. From Morwell, James and Martha had moved their family to Perth WA by 1900. James worked as an Engine Driver in Perth.
Horace was a Coach Builder in 1916 when he was rejected for service in the AIF - as a child he had Infantile Paralysis which left him with a damaged leg. In 1935 Horace married Annie Maxwell (b1909 in Perth WA) and the couple settled at Wanneroo where Horace was a Market Gardener.
In April 1942 Horace enlisted in the ACMF (Private; Service No:W82349) and served with 4th Battalion C Coy (Swanbourne) VDC until Demobilisation in August 1945.
Horace and Annie lived at Wanneroo, where Horace was a Market Gardener until the early 1960s when they moved to Morley, Perth WA. Annie died in 1975 and Horace in 1976.
