Herbert became a Sergeant in the 32nd Battalion.  After applying for a soldier settler's block, Herbert chose the closest one to Dumbleyung.  Herbert married Ellen Mills, the housekeeper on the neighbouring Boucher farm and they had five girls, Vera, Hilda, Diana, Eva and Hazel.
