Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Youngest of four brothers who served in WWII, Private Sydney Victor Oates (Service No:W66901) served in the ACMF with 1 (Perth) Battalion VDC from 29 March 1942 to 27 January 1944.

Born in Subiaco, Perth, Western Australia in 1914, Sydney was youngest of six children of William Henry Oates (b1871 in Clunes, Victoria) and Eliza Fenton Simmons (b1873 in Armidale, New South Wales). William moved to the Western Australian Goldfields in the early 1890s, and was a Miner in 1897 when he and Eliza married in Coolgardie. The couple lived in Boulder - where William was a Miner - and moved to Perth in the early 1900s. William worked as a Wood Merchant in Subiaco until 1915, when he and Eliza returned to Boulder with their children. William was a Miner in 1917 when he enlisted in the AIF. Following his Discharge, he and Eliza settled in Albany, where William - an 'Incapcitated Soldier' - he was gassed in France - died in 1924.

Sydney worked in Perth as a Time and Cost Clerk with the Perth City Council, and in the 1950s spent time as an Accountant in Singapore. In 1965 in Perth he married Ruby Lillian McConvill (nee Foley; b1913 in Perth, Western Australia) - Ruby had worked as a Shop Assistant in Fremantle in the 1930s. Sydney and Ruby settled in Perth, where Sydney was an Accountant. Ruby died in 1979 and Sydney in 1990.
