Gilbert Malcolm Lucas, aged 41 years, passed away at the District Hospital on Sunday night at 8 o’clock. On the previous Thursday, deceased was admitted to the hospital & was operated on for appendicitis. Peritonitis set in & Mr Lucas as stated passed away.
The late Mr Lucas who was a farmer at Noorlah, was born in Launceston, Tasmania, & enlisted in Melbourne during the Great War, serving over 4 years with the A.I.F. overseas. On his return from active service he came to Queensland & settled in the Mackay district, & about 5 years ago he took up land Noorlah where he since has been engaged in cane growing. He leaves a wife & young family of 4 children to mourn their sad loss. A young son predeceased him some 6 months ago.
The funeral moved from the Church of England on Monday afternoon at 4 o’clock. Returned soldiers acted as pall bearers & paid their last respects to a fellow digger. Rev T.C.Kernke officiated at the graveside.
