Warrant Officer John Maynard Denny (Service No:415313) initially served with the Militia (Service Nos:W246631/W30156) from 1934 to 1940 - Sapper, Corporal and Sergeant with 13th Field Coy and 11th Battalion. He then served in the ACMF (Sergeant; Service No:W30156) in July/September 1940 and was attached to Melville Training Depot 2 when he Discharged to enlist in the RAAF on 14 September 1941 as an Aircraftman attached to 5 Initial Training School Pearce. As an LAC, he mustered as an Air Gunner, attending Wireless and Gunnery Schools (WAGS) in 1942 at Ballarat and West Sale. Promoted to Sergeant, he was attached to the RAF and embarked from Melbourne for England on 6 March 1943, carrying out active service over Europe. Whilst attached to the RAF, Sergeant Denny served with 29 Operational Training Unit (OTU), No 1660 Conversion Unit (CU), 50 Squadron Skellingthorpe, HQ Radar Station and No 11 Personnel Despatch and Receiving Centre (PDRC). Returning to Australia on 21 February 1944, WO Denny was attached to Air Gunnery School West Sale at Discharge on 13 August 1945.
Born in 1915 in Perth WA, John was the third of six children of Charles Maynard Denny (b1866 in Portland, Victoria) and Irene Alexandra West (b1889 in Melbourne, Victoria). Charles (a Surveyor) and Irene married in 1909 in Perth WA, where they settled and raised their family and Charles worked as a Surveyor with the Lands and Surveys Department. Following Charles' death in 1932, Irene remarried.
John statred work as a Civil Servant (Clerk) and served in the Militia and ACMF before enlisting in the RAAF. In 1941 in Perth WA, John married Annie Jean Bone (b1919 in Meekatharra, WA). Following his Discharge, John and Annie lived in Gosnells, Perth WA where John worked as a Civil Servant (Clerk) with the Land Titles Office and later with the Department of Labour and National Service. John was also a Newsagent in Redcliffe, WA and Chairman of the Memorial Park Lawn Tennis Club. John died in 1990 and Annie in 2013.
