Harold John Green was born in 1881, in Thebarton, South Australia. He lived in Goodwood, South Australia where he worked as a Moulder. He was married to Mrs. Olive Emily Green and had two children.

On the 2nd of May, 1916 at age 34 and 10 months he enlisted to the 32nd Battalion ranked as a private. He had previously served in the Australian Garrison Artillery for three and a half years. His unit embarked from Adelaide on board the HMAT A70 Ballarat on the 12th of August 1916. They disembarked over a month later at Devonport, England on the 30th of September 1916. Harold was 35 years old.

He was processed overseas to France on the 28th of February 1917 and was marched into the 5th Australian Divisional Base Depot in Etaples, France. On the 5th of March 1917 he was marched out to his unit and fought in the field for the 32nd Battalion the next day, the 6th of March 1917. He went on leave to the United Kingdom on the 7th of February 1918, and rejoined his unit on the 24th of February 1918. He was wounded in action after being gassed on the 24th of April 1918, in the fighting around Villers Bretonneux . On the 19th of June 1918 he was marched out of his unit and marched into the 5th Australian Divisional Base Depot. He went on leave to the United Kingdom on the 5th of January 1919, and rejoined his unit on the 26th Of January. He was marched out of the 8th Brigade Battalion for return to Australia on the 2nd of April and marched into No 2 Command Depot in Weymouth, England on the 10th of April 1919.

At the end of the war he embarked for Australia from Liverpool aboard the HMAT 'Durham' on the 22nd of May 1919. They disembarked at Adelaide on the 16th of July 1919 and he was officially discharged on the 1st of September, 1919.

He passed away on the 19th of March 1931 at the age of 49 at Keswick, South Australia. He is buried at the AIF Cemetery on West Terrace in Adelaide, South Australia.
