Private Gordon Westlake (Service No:5070) was mobilised for Home Service with the Citizens Forces on 12 May 1915, and enlisted in the AIF on 28 April 1917 with Australian Army Medical Corps (AAMC). Private Westlake had not been allotted a Service No on enlistment - the Service No:5070 was allotted on board No 1 Hospital Ship Karoola, which embarked for England on 28 April 1917. Private Westlake embarked from England for Fremantle on 25 September 1919 on board HT Mahan, and was attached to the Australian Army Medical Corps (AAMC) at Discharge on 24 April 1920. In WWII, Private Westlake served in the ACMF (Service No:W61266) from 25 February 1942 to 30 June 1945 with Western Command Intelligence Section G Branch.
Gordon was born in Fremantle, Western Australia in 1895, third of six children (sons) of William John Westlake (b1865 in Dunedin, New Zealand) and Annie Jane Harry (b1863 in Cornwall, England). Annie immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1869, arriving in Melbourne, Victoria on board the Lincolnshire, and William arrived in Melbourne in 1888 on board the Te Anau. William was a Coppersmith and Annie a Dressmaker in 1890 when they married in Ballarat, and by 1893 they had settled in Fremantle, Western Australia. William and Annie lived in Fremantle, Cottesloe Beach and Caversham in Guildford, where they raised their family and William worked for the WAGR as a Coppersmith/Foreman.
Gordon was a Clerk at Cottesloe Beach in 1915 when he enlisted in the Army, and following his Discharge lived in Swanbourne where he was a Merchant. In 1925 in Cottesloe he married Mary (Miriam) Elizabeth Christian (b1899 in Durham, England) - Miriam immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1910, arriving in Fremantle on board the Orsova. Gordon and Miriam settled in Peppermint Grove, where they raised their fmaily and Gordon was a Warehouseman, Merchant and Indent Agent (ie connceting buyers with sellers of goods - eg he was the WA managing agent for Wallace Buck & Goodes). Until 1948 Gordon was also ( in partnership with hir brother SamSH & G Westlake Farming) in Wyalkatchem. Miriam was an accomplished musician, completing a Bachelor of Music in 1937 through the University of Adelaide. Gordon died in 1956 (Sheila McClemans Barrister and Solicitor; 4 February 1957; NAA), and Miriam in 1985.
