77 years ago today, on the Friday afternoon of the 24th October 1947, Private William Lester Harragon, referred to as Bill, 1st Battalion (Reg No-7817), labourer and special class guard, N.S.W. Railways, from Maitland Road, Hexham, New South Wales and 11 Baker Street, Mayfield, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 56. METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) E NW. 35.

Born at Singleton, New South Wales on the 19th February 1891 to William, died 20.12.1914, Newcastle, N.S.W., age?, buried at METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 21 SE. 34, unmarked grave?, and Mary Ada Harragon nee Gorton (remarried 1921 to Edward Williams, Newcastle, N.S.W.), died 4.11.1926, Burwood, N.S.W., age 64?, sleeping at METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 21 SE. 34, unmarked grave?; husband of Miriam Bella Harragon nee Tillitzki, married 1912, Waratah, N.S.W., died 1967, Goulburn, N.S.W., unknown place of burial. Daughter Muriel Ada Harragon, born 20.3.1917, Murrumburrah, N.S.W., died 23.4.1918, aged 13 months, a Bud in Heaven, sleeping at METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) E NW. 33. Also William Edgar Harragon, born 7.10.1914, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 7.10.1914, Hamilton, N.S.W., a Bud in Heaven, sleeping at METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) E NW. 33?, Bill enlisted on the 30th October 1917 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on the 19th December 1917.
Admitted to hospital 5.3.1918 (pleurisy & influenza, dangerously ill).

Commenced return to Australia 31.5.1919.

Bill arrived home on the 12th July 1919, being discharged on the 6th August 1919.

Mr. Harragon’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at Bill’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Service record states Died after Discharge, 23/10/1947.
