Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

A very happy birthday to Second World War veteran Ruth Harris (née Wadley) who was born in Witham in Essex, England, 100 years ago. Ruth today lives in my community in the electorate of Burt!
In February 1945, Ruth joined the Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force (WAAAF). Before enlisting, she worked as a ledger clerk for Harris, Scarfe and Sandovers. In the WAAAF, Ruth became an aircraftwoman and was mustered as a general clerk, undertaking duties for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in Perth and Melbourne. She said the best thing about serving was ‘learning the importance of obeying those in authority’.
Ruth was discharged from the services in October 1946. At the end of that year, she married Rodney Harris who had been a leading aircraftman in the RAAF. The couple went on to have 3 children and now have a large, extended family. Sadly, Rodney died in 2011.
Besides raising her family, Ruth enjoyed reading, making French flowers, millinery, dress making, calligraphy, art, card making, and decoupage.
When asked about the secret to her long life, Ruth replied, ‘trust in God always, and live a wholesome life’.
