Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board

Leonard Roy ELVIN, (Service Number 2828) was born on 10 October 1890 at Tuena, NSW. Although he had been employed casually previously, he commenced permanent work for the NSW Railways as a cleaner at Bathurst Locomotive Depot on 23 August 1910, becoming a fireman on 16 March 1912 and transferring to Eveleigh Depot in 1914. He was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces on 20 June 1915. On his enlistment papers, signed 29 June 1915 at Liverpool, he gave his calling as ‘Locomotive Fireman’ and his father as his next of kin as he was unmarried.

He left Sydney on board HMAT ‘Argyllshire’ on 30 September 1915.

He was killed in action between 5 May and 8 May 1917. No details survive of the circumstances of his death, but his body was never recovered.

Leonard Roy ELVIN (Service Number 2828) was born on 10th October 1890 at Tuena, NSW. He commenced permanent work for the NSW Railways as a cleaner at Bathurst Locomotive Depot on 23rd August 1910. He became a fireman on 16th March 1912. He transferred to Eveleigh Depot in 1914. He was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces on 20th June 1915. On his enlistment papers, which he signed 29th June 1915 at Liverpool, he gave his occupation as ‘Locomotive Fireman’. His father was his next of kin as he was unmarried.

He left Sydney on board HMAT ‘Argyllshire’ on 30th September 1915. He was taken on the strength of the 1st Battalion at Tel-el-Kebir on 14th February 1916. He then went to join the British Expeditionary Force in France via Alexandria and Marseilles, arriving at the end of March. He was appointed Lance-Corporal on 18th September, Temporary Corporal the same day, Corporal on 26th October, Temporary Sergeant on 19th January, and Sergeant on 6th February.

He was killed in action between 5th May and 8th May 1917. His body was never recovered. Since he has no known grave he is remembered on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial in Picardie, France.
