Biography contributed by John Edwards

"...88 Bugler Walter Stanley Manchip, 10th Battalion. A labourer from Hindmarsh, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the first contingent from Adelaide on 20 October 1914 aboard HMAT Ascanius (A11) for Suez. The battalion landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 and he was wounded in action which required evacuation to Cairo for treatment and recuperation before he rejoined his unit in late May. Bugler Manchip continued to serve in Gallipoli until the battalion was withdrawn to Egypt in late December 1915. On 27 February he was transferred to the 50th Battalion and was appointed Lance Corporal in mid-April. The battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, during June 1916 and he was promoted to Temporary Corporal (Cpl) a month later. Cpl Manchip was killed in action at Mouquet Farm on 4 September 1916. He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. He was aged 24 years." - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)
