Jack was the fifth of six children of James William Carswell (b1886 in Gympie, QLD) and Mabel Guard (b1890 in Gympie, QLD). James (a Miner) and Mabel married in 1914 in Gympie, QLD where they settled and raised their family. James worked as a Miner and Labourer.
Jack was a Labourer in 1944 when he enlisted in the RAAF. He was a Leading Aircraftman (Service No:151882) attached to Garbutt Airforce Base (Townsville) when he was Discharged in 1946. Brother Gordon William (Service No:Q135483), Sister Myrtle Gladys (Service Nos:QF55556/Q268643), Sister-in-Law Dorothy June Hall (Service no:NF480145) and Brothers-in-Law Colin Ray Chapman (Service NO:QX63372) and Robert Edward Nobbs (Service No:QX37890) also served in WWII.
Jack settled back in Gympie QLD and was working as a Labourer in 1949 when he married Peggy Genevieve Bartholomew (b1927 in Gympie, QLD) - Peggy was a Shop Assistant. By the early 1950s Jack was working as a Garage Attendant in Gympie, where he and Peggy raised their family. Peggy died in 1989 and Jack in 1999.
