9 Oct 1917: Honoured Military Cross, Broodseinde Ridge, Military Cross to be awarded to Captain WH Bunning 22nd Battalion AIF 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in an attack. He penetrated the position and established his posts, and although his numbers were much depleted by casualties, he repelled two counter attacks, causing the enemy severe loss. He personally carried out a reconnaissance and kept his commanding officer informed of the situation.' Source: 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 137 Date: 30 August 1918
12 Feb 1918: Discharged AIF WW1, Captain, 22nd Infantry Battalion, Discharged England in the AIF transferred to hold a commission in the British Indian Army with effect of that date.

Died Caulfield Military Hospital Victoria on 4th April 1924.
