Corporal Michael Hubert Hardy (Service No:16601) enlisted in the RAAF on 27 May 1940 as an Aircraftman (Trainee). On 21 January 1942 he Trade Tested as an Emergency Driver attached to No 14 Sqaudron and in August that year was promoted to Leading Aircraftman (mustered as a Fitter). Born in 1919 in Subiaco, Perth WA, Michael was the youngest of five children of Hubert Edward Hardy (b1880 in London, England) and Constance Ethel Finlay (b1884 in Melbourne, Victoria). Hubert immigrated with his parents and siblings in 1893, arriving in Fremantle WA on board the Helena Mind. By the late 1920s they had relocated to Sydney, NSW where Hubert worked as a Staff Superintendent and Storekeeper.

Michael worked in Fremantle WA as a Wire Drawer, Chauffeur and Truck Driver and in 1938 married Violet May Nash (b1919 in Perth, WA). Michael was unemployed when he enlisted in the RAAF in 1940, and following his Discharge he and Violet lived in South Perth where Michael was a Truck Driver.
