Before enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force in 1915, Woolford was a young contractor living in Williamstown, South Australia. He was born on 11th December 1892 and was 22 years old at enlistment.

Henry Howard Woolford enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 11 October 1915 in Adelaide, South Australia. He nominated his mother Mrs. Catherine Vain Woolford as his next of kin.

He then joined the 31st Remount Unit, which was responsible for the care and management of horses used in the war. He was assigned Regimental Number 7746 and held the rank of Trooper. He embarked the HMAT Orsova A67 from Melbourne 12 November 1918 to the Middle East.

Throughout the war he was moved to different units; the 5th Divisional Ammunition Column and later the 14th Field Artillery Brigade. He was sent to the hospital a few times during his service with illnesses such as mumps, tonsilitis and

He was admitted to hospital at Mena on 9th March 1916 with mumps and transferred the same day to a Hospital in Abbassia. He was then transferred on 12th May 1916 to medical services at Tell el Kebir and then to a Hospital in Montaza. He rejoined his unit on 21st May 1916 but was soon after back in hospital diagnosed with tonsillitis. In 1919 he was admitted to hospital with appendicitis a couple of months before his return to Australia

Henry returned home in August 1919 and was discharged in 31 October 1919. He married Margaret Hamilton Manser in 1924. He lived many years after the war and sadly passed away at 71 years old on 13th of August 1964. He was laid to rest at Mount Crawford Cemetery.
