Leading Aircraftman Basil Howard Blume (Service No:56265) enlisted in the RAAF at No 1 Recruiting Centre Melbourne on 20 May 1942 as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Flight Mechanic and remustered as Fitter. ACI Blume was attached to No 4 School of Technical Training (STT) Adelaide and No 1 Engineering School (ES) Ascot Vale before posting to the Northern Territory where he served with 55 Operational Base Unit (OBU) Birdum and No 2 Squadron Batchelor from 30 November 1942 to 21 May 1944. Promoted to Leading Aircraftman on 1 January 1943, LAC Blume posted to RAAF Laverton in 1944 and served with No 1 Aircraft Depot and No 37 (Transport) Squadron. LAC Blume was Discharged on 17 December 1945.

Basil was born at Barker's Creek via Castlemaine, Victoria in 1920, third of four children of Colin Stanley Blume (b1890 in Beechworth, Victoria) and Daisy Evelyn Maddern (b1894 in Castlemaine, Victoria). Colin (a Carter at Barker's Creek) and Daisy married in 1915 at Barker's Creek where they settled and raised their family and Colin was a Carter,

On serving an Apprenticeship with Verlin & Laby in Barker's Creek, Basil worked in their factory as a Carpenter before enlisting in the RAAF. He was described by his employer as 'courteous, gentlemanly and honest in his dealings' (NAA). In 1947 in Melbourne, Basil married Lesley Jean Harris (b1923 in Beaufort, Victoria). Basil and Lesley settled in Melbourne where they raised their family and Basil worked as a Carpenter and Property Officer. Basil died in 2018 and Lesley in 2020.
