Herbert is the son of Robert Hoy. Herbert James Hoy L built a home at 124 Jeffrey St Armidale. His father Robert lived on Hoys Rd on the outskirts of Armidale after which the road in named. Herbert joined the RAAF however, was refused overseas deployment by his superiors because he had a wife and 3 children at home. Herbert was quite disappointed by this decision, however, went on to continue his service with the RAAF and was deployed at bases in NSW and QLD. After discharge he returned to servicing and repairing cars in Armidale and become well known for his expertise in motor mechanics.
