Sydney was the fifth of nine children of Robert Barker (born 1861 in Pickering, Yorkshire, England) and Maria Woodall (born 1859 in Seamer, Yorkshire, England). Robert and Maria married in 1881, and in 1891 the family immigrated to QLD Australia, settling at Helidon on the Darling Downs in QLD where Sydney was born in 1893.

Sydney was working as a Farm Hand in Helidon when he enlsted in the AIF in 1915. He served as a Private (Service No: 09) with 41st Battalion and was KIA at Passchendale Ridge in Belgium in October 1917.

Sydney's brothers - Robert Woodall and Francis Gibson - and brothers -in -law Patrick Stark and Harry St John King also served in WWI
