Enid Foote
Enid Maibrey Foote was born on 30 May 1919 in Ipswich Queensland to parents Loftus, 36 and Mary 29. Enid was educated at Ipswich Central State School before moving to Ipswich Girls Grammar and finally Fairholme College Toowoomba. On completion of her education Enid worked in clerical positions and as an assistant secretary to the Red Cross society Ipswich. At a time when Australia was threatened by Japan, Enid joined the WAAAF on 14 January 1942 as a clerk. Described in her enlistment assessment as an, “excellent type of girl”, Enid was to gain experience at 3 Fighter Sector in Townsville followed by the Combined Operations Intelligence Centre. Having proved her abilities, then Corporal Foote, applied for and was granted a commission becoming Assistant Section Officer on 6 November 1943. On 7 February 1944 Enid attended number 22 RAAF Intelligence Officers Course, she was the first and only WAAAF to attend a RAAF Intelligence Officers courses. As a commissioned officer Enid’s first posting was to RAAF Command and it was not until the end of the war that she was posted to ATIS. She never spoke to her family about what she did during the war though she always said that she was proud of her service.
