Biography contributed

Son of Henry and Emily Marshall, of 301, Mount Ash Rd., Sydenham, London.

YET AGAIN WE HOPE TO MEET THEE WHEN THE DAY OF LIFE HAS FLED

Sydney George Marshall was born at Sydenham, London in 1895, the child of Henry Marshall and Emily Mary Hunt. In 1901 the family lived at Prospect Rd, Lewisham and Henry Marshall was a Milk Man. Two daughters Ellen and Maud also lived there.

The 1911 UK Census lists 16 year old Sidney living with his parents at 30 Mount Ash Rd, Sydenham S E and working as a Fish Monger. His father is listed as a Milk Carrier.

On 29 Mar 1913, 18 year old, Sidney Marshall immigrated to Queensland on-board the steamer “Perthshire” arriving in Brisbane on 29 May 1913. There were 392 government immigrants on board. Interestingly Sidney is listed as being 21 years old and a farm labourer on the outbound passenger list but as 18 years old on the arrival passenger record.

By June 1915 Sidney was living at Roadvale and working as a Baker when he enlisted in the AIF and assigned Service Number 1335.

An article in the Queensland Times reported: Mr. S. Marshall was given a send-off during the week (writes our Roadvale correspondent) and presented with a wristlet watch. He is at present in training at Enoggera.

His AIF records show that he weighed 9 stone, Complexion Dark but bright, Eyes dark blue and Hair Dark. His height was left blank.
S. Marshall was one of the soldiers photographed in The Queenslander Pictorial, supplement to The Queenslander, 1915. His photograph appears on page 23 of The Queenslander Pictorial, supplement to the Queenslander, 25 December 1915.

Sidney was assigned to the 5th Light Horse Regiment, 10th Reinforcement and his unit embarked from Brisbane, Queensland, on board HMAT A69 Warilda on 5 October 1915. In Dec 1915 he was admitted to 4th Australian Auxiliary Hospital in Abbassia, Cairo, Egypt suffering from Mumps. By March 1917 he was transferred to the 2nd Light Horse Brigade and in April suffered a Gun Shot Wound to the left leg and left shoulder. He was hospitalised at 14th Australian General Hospital in Egypt and returned to service in Sep 1917. Sydney was Killed in Action on 17 Sep 1918 at Ain Hajla, Palestine.

His parents received a letter dated 27 Mat 1919 confirming he was Killed in Action on 17 Sep 1918 and buried at the same place that day and that it was understood that photographs were being taken as soon as practicable to send to next of kin. It is not recorded in the file if his family did receive a photo.  His personal effected were sent to his mother Mrs E Marshall at 30 Mount Ash Rd, Sydenham, London. They were a Scarf, Pair mittens and 4 handkerchiefs.

Sidney Marshall is remembered at the Jerusalem War Cemetery, Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour and the Boonah War Memorial and the Kalbar War Memorial.
