Biography contributed by VWM Australia

First enlisted in WWI on 22 December 1915. He was allotted to "C Coy" 2nd Depot, Mitcham Camp. His conduct and character whilst in the traiing camp was assessed as 'BAD'  and it was decided that he was unlikey to become an efficient soldier and was discharged on 17 March 1916. It was later found that he had also falsified his age. It is understood that when he completed his first Attestation he was not yet 15 years old. Given this, his lack of life experience and skills if likely to have played a part in his inabilty to complete his training.

Undeterred, under the alias of Henry LANG (SN:6451), he enlisted on 3 April 1916 in Victoria. Allotted to the 24th (Depot) Battalion, Royal Park. He embarked from Melbourne aboard the "Hororata" on 23 November 1916 arriving in Plymouth (UK) on 29 January 1917.
