Running away from home at the age of 14, Henry Thomas Ryan joined the A.I.F. in 1916, and served until 1918. He enlisted again last year, at 39. and left
in November for the Near East. Today his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Ryan. of College avenue, Prospect, were informed that he had beern killed in action on April 19.
He was educated at the North Adelaide Public School which he left in 1916 to go to Victoria. He wrote from Victoria to inform his parents that he had enlisted giving a wrong age.
He joined a Victorian unit as a signaller last year, and wrote several times to his parents after he reached the Near East.
He worked in many parts of Australia chiefly in engineering plants. Signaller Ryan's father served in the Light Horse in the last war. - News (Adelaide, SA : 1923 - 1954), 3 June, p. 5.
