Aldewin was the son of William and Charlotte Pengilly [neeWalker]. He was
attached to Base Depot Infantry from 2 January to 1 February 1915 when he
was appointed Sergeant. Aldewin embarked HMAT A17 Port Lincoln at
Adelaide on 1 April, later proceeded to Egypt and then fought at Gallipoli. On
30 July he was admitted to the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station Anzac,
then transferred to the fleet sweeper due to a leg ulcer. On 15 August
Aldewin was admitted to No.2 General Hospital at Mena for treatment for the
leg ulcers, having been treated for varicose veins at the same hospital a week
earlier. His father was notified of his condition. He also received treatment for
his condition at Helouan on 8 September, then assigned to light duties on 10
October, prior to rejoining his unit on 27 November.

On 3 April 1916 Aldewin was sent to France. He was shot in the knee on 27
July and the next day embarked H.S.Cambria at Boulogne bound for England
where he was admitted to hospital at Leicester for treatment. He was sent to
France on 4 February and transferred to the 10th Battalion on 16 February.
Aldewin was treated for a septic foot on 1 March and sent on H.S. Gloucester
Castle on 10 March for treatment at the 1st London General Hospital. In May,
while still in England he was treated for psoriasis. In October he was admitted
to the Military Hospital at Tidworth for further attention to the injured knee.
On 27 April 1918 Aldewin was wounded again, being shot in the left leg, for
which he received treatment at the 1st Stationary General Hospital at
Birmingham, England. In June he was admitted to Sutton Veny Hospital with
measles, being discharged on 22 July.
As a result of his wounds, debility and illness Aldewin was returned to
Australia on the Medic on 15 October and discharged on 13 December.
