Eldest of two siblings (Hazel and Murray) who served in WWII, Flight Officer Hazel Alice Jackson (Service No:93692) enlisted in the WAAAF at No 2 Recruiting Centre Sydney as an Aircraftwoman I on 15 April 1942, and was a Flight Officer attached to Overseas HQ London at Discharge on 22 September 1945.
Hazel was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1920, eldest of two children of Samuel Henry Jackson MC, MiD (b1892 in Bundaberg, QLD) and Alice Mabel Archibald (b1887 in Ulmarra, New South Wales). Samuel (a Civil Servant) enlisted in the Army in 1914 (2nd Lieutenant, 11th Battalion), and he and Alice (a Teacher) married in Perth in 1916. Following his Discharge from the Army, Samuel trained in London with Insurance Firm Thornett & Fehr, returning to Sydney to Manage their Sydney Offices. Samuel and Alice settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and in the 1930s Samuel was a Chartered Accountant and Alice was Editor of the Australian Women's Weekly. Samuel served in the Intelligence Corps in WWII, and was appointed Deputy Director of Security for the State of Victoria. Alice was a Journalist and accredited War Correspondent, touring defence establishments in Western Australia and New Guinea, and in 1945 reported on the UN Conference in San Francisco and on war damage in Europe. In 1950 Samuel served as the Australian Representative on the United Nations Temporary Commission on Korea, and then worked in Sydney as a Chartered Accountant and Auditor.
Hazel graduated from Sydney University, where she was a member of the Drama and Debating Societes, and then worked in Brisbane as a Clerk. In 1942 when she enlisted in the Air Force, Hazel was a Journalist working for the Sydney Morning Herald. In 1958 in Sydney she married Adam Blake Forsyth (b1915 in Sydney, New South Wales) - Adam (an Accountant) served in the ACMF (Corporal; Service No:N297201). Hazel and Adam settled in Sydney, where Hazel worked as Freelance Journalist, Orchardist and Writer, and Adam was an Accountant. Adam died in 1984 and Hazel died in 1987.
